RECOMMENDED READING

Customers are always asking us to recommend new titles they may be interested in reading. Our first question is "What to you like to read?", or "Is there a particular writer or artist you like to follow?". On this page, we hope to provide some interesting alternative choices for comics you may not be familiar with, based on some popular sellers.

IF YOU LIKE: DARK AVENGERS

by Brian Bendis & Mike Deodato

Dark Avengers

THEN WE THINK YOU'LL LIKE: THUNDERBOLTS

by Warren Ellis & Mike Deodato

Thunderbolts

WHY WOULD I LIKE THIS? Firstly, although artist Mike Deodato has been around since the early 1990s, his work on THUNDERBOLTS made him a fan-favorite again, and almost certainly landed him the job on DARK AVENGERS. Secondly, in the final issue of DARK AVENGERS, writer Brian Bendis acknowledges and thanks Warren Ellis for his work on T-BOLTS, in showing Bendis how to write villains as "heroes", and most importantly, how to handle Norman Osborn. Thirdly, most of the T-bolts team became the Dark Avengers! This is one of the easiest suggestions, ever! The entire Ellis/Deodato run is collected in trade paperback.

IF YOU LIKE: BLACKEST NIGHT

by Geoff Johns & Ivan Reis (and others)

Blackest Night

THEN WE THINK YOU'LL LIKE: ANNIHILATION

by Keith Giffen, Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning, and various artists

WHY WOULD I LIKE THIS? Although it stars many of the forgotten Marvel cosmic heroes like Drax the Destroyer, The Super-Skrull, and The Silver Surfer, Nova is the real star of the series overall. Marvel conceived Nova in the 1970s to be a cross between Peter Parker and The Green Lantern, and it works. Even the basic story of ANNIHILATION is the same as BLACKEST NIGHT: An incredible force with an unknown leader is sweeping over the galaxy destroying everything in it's path. Facing incredible odds and hopelessly outnumbered, the heroes band together despite suffering heavy casualties to try and stop the bad guys. Terrific series that made some stale characters interesting again. The entire ANNIHILATION run is collected in trade paperback.

IF YOU LIKE: SANDMAN
by Neil Gaiman & various artists

Sandman

THEN WE THINK YOU'LL LIKE: LUCIFER
by Mike Carey & various artists

Lucifer

WHY WOULD I LIKE THIS? If there's any title that's practically a sequel to SANDMAN, it's LUCIFER. Remember Lucifer from the Sandman storyline "Season of Mists"? The big guy leaves Hell during that tale, but what happened to him afterwards? One of the most powerful and controversial beings in existence can't just go about his life without stirring up trouble, can he? Of course not! The title was guided under the watchful eye of Neil Gaiman early on, until Gaiman basically said of Mike Carey's work "This guy is doing a better job on this character than I could've even imagined." It won several international awards over it's 6+ year run, and was nominated for five Eisners. Not only is this a terrific dark fantasy, but it brings up questions on the nature & reason for religion, the relationship of god with his people, and in the end, who is really responsible for evil in the universe. The answers are never what you expect them to be in this underrated series. The entire LUCIFER series is collected in trade paperback.
